Artist Statement

I am a visual artist, working in film, textiles, painting, writing and installation.

My art is immersed in my experiences of displacement as a result of the conflict in the north of Ireland, persistently expressing these experiences, as well as those of my displaced community.
For me, the past was for so long shrouded in a taboo and ‘say nothing’ attitude, that it was many years before
I could approach this subject.

I continually gather content for my art making, by consideration of the society I live in, and through both deliberate and casual conversation. A continual note-taker and note-maker, I expand these into journals and poems, all informing my art making. As a result, many of my paintings, and more recent textile works contain words and phrases that are directly linked to my thoughts about our displacement. Written words also appear in my films, along with the spoken word, uttered by me

and by others.

My paintings are generally non-figurative, aspiring towards abstraction, generally brought back to earth by the words they contain. All of my work tends to have pleasing visual aspects, juxtaposed against their often brutal themes. Painting, drawing and writing always evolves into film, a medium
I feel very much at home with. I am inspired by the moving images that I record, which I experiment with, and sculpt into expressions of lived experiences.
